ABRASIVES

Select the abrasive stone
The selection of the honing stone is very important because it determines the life of the abrasive, the bore precision, the removing time of the material, the finish degree and life of guide shoes and mandrel (when it has integral shoes). In this selection it is necessary to consider the follow elements:
- type of abrasive (grint, hardness, J, A, N, D);
- type of material to hone;
- material hardness;
- working time.

CAR Srl supplies the four abrasive stone type used in honing operation:

  • Silicon Carbide (J): used for the material removing on cast iron, brass, bronze, aluminium and hard steel;
  • Aluminium Oxide (A): used for roughing on many types of steel and deburring on all meterials;
  • C.B.N. Cubic Boron Nitride called Borazon (N): with its shreding capacity it is recommended for honing tough alloy steel and other abrasive resistent materials
  • Diamond (D): used for the honing of widia, chrome, cast iron, glass, ceramic, carbide.

Important:

  1. The CAR abrasives are available in a very large range, starting from rough grint (60) to the fine grint (800) and in a variety of hardnesses;
  2. The CAR abrasives are inter-changeable with those one of other famous American and English Companies;
  3. The abrasives can be supplied not assembled on the supports so that the customer can stick or braze these abrasives on any kind and mark of mandrel.
The superficial finishing obtained with the honing is determined by: the grit stone dimension, the type of material to work on, the honing pressure on the stone, the rotation speed of the mandrel (cutting speed), the type of coolant, the type of abrasive used.
